Paradoxes in History: Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Napoleon Alexander the Great Alexander III of Macedon popularly known as Alexander the great (July 20/21 356- June 10/ 11 323 BC) was the ruler of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon and a member of the Argead dynasty. Born in Pella, Alexander succeeded his father Philip II of Macedon at the young age of 21 and spent his years in unprecedented military campaigns that ran through Asia, North Africa and India and by the time of his death at age 33, he had created one of the most expansive empires in the ancient world spanning from Greece, to Egypt and north-west India (Cawthorne, 2004). In battle, he was undefeated making him one of the most successful military commanders in history. In his youth, Alexander came under the tutelage of Aristotle, who is said to have exerted a lot of influence on the future conqueror shaping his general philosophy and outlook of life. At the age of 16, Alexander was made a general in his father’s army where he honed his military skills and emerged victorious in many battles fought for his father. Evaluating the Success of America’s Policy of Containment American policy of containment refers to the foreign policy strategy of the US in the early years of the Cold war. The policy was to defeat the Soviet Union by preventing it from expanding the territories under its Communist control or otherwise extending its influence. This, naturally, resulted in strained relations and rivalry between the two superpowers. Despite the many difficulties, American policy of containment during the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War did manage to contain the expansion of Communism to a certain extent. The end of the Korean War proves the fact that America’s policy of containing Communism was successful. However, America’s policy of containing the infamous Cuban Missile Crisis was not so successful. In fact, it almost resulted in a nuclear war. The crisis was a tense confrontation between the Soviet Union and United States over the Soviet deployment of nuclear missiles in Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis began on October 14, 1962 and lasted until November 20, 1962. It could have resulted in a nuclear war. In April 1961, President Kennedy supplied arms, equipment and transport for some anti-Castro exiles to invade Cuba and overthrow Fidel Castro. Castro had overthrown the American backed Batista. The Bay of Pigs incident which was Kennedy’s attempt to oust Communism from Cuba was a disastrous failure. Fidel Castro sought Soviet support; the Soviet Union installed nuclear weapons in Cuba. Finally, Cuba came under the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence; after the Bay of Pigs fiasco, Soviet Union arms flooded into Cuba. In May 1962 the Soviet Union announced public ly that they were supplying Cuba with arms. Two Kinds vs. The Yellow Wallpaper Literature 210 After reading two very different pieces of literature one could come to the conclusion that there are many similarities and many differences between them. By comparing and contrasting the two short stories Two Kinds by Amy Tan, and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilmans we can better see how they are similar and different. Both authors of these short stories seemed to have created their stories a bit from their own lives, and through that made some very interesting characters. The authors also seemed to have thought very well about their characters personas. The first story is Amy Tan’s Two Kinds starts out with a girl explaining her mother, and what†¦show more content†¦I also see the wife and little girl trying as hard as they can to impress the other two characters but eventually giving up and not caring about pleasing them as much. Both authors did a great job with settings as I could always perfectly picture where everything was taking place and how all of the rooms that they were in looked. Aside from the stories being completely different in plot, theme, and settings another main difference between the two is the perspective from which they are written. Two Kinds is written from a girl who is looking back on her life and remembering things that happened when she was a little girl. On the other hand The Yellow Wallpaper was written more like journal that had been written every once and a while by Johns wife. They are also different because Gilmans seemed to make use of the imagery literary device a lot more then Tan did. As I read The Yellow Wallpaper I was constantly thinking about the scenery and picturing it in my head. Amy Tan also used imagery, but it seemed like she used emotions between the mother and daughter more. The author of The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilmans, was born in Connecticut in 1860. Charlotte’s father left her shortly after she was born. She married an artist in 1884, and gave birth to her first and only child the following year. Event management starts from when an organizer is informed of the event and continues until when the event has ended and stock taken to evaluate whether it has achieved its objectives or failed to do so. Being an event manager is a challenging profession since it involves integ rating the available resources to meet the needs of various stakeholders. Event managers have to ensure that their events meet the expectations of the different audiences who attend them. Small, medium and international conferences and events require different levels of preparation depending with the duration, number of attendants, location, distance and available resources. Spatial Analysis A Three-Day Conference Small conferences that take very few weeks and involve a few people are usually organized by companies themselves. However, the complexity of the event may require the need for professional event organizers to be involved.
